Before starting my service, I knew I wanted to write a blog about the adventure I was about to embark on. I spent a lot of time thinking what its title was going to be. Inspiration came from Taiye Selasi’s powerful Ghana Must Go which I finally read just prior to staging in Washington, DC. From there, it morphed into Going Go Ghana…Ghana Going Gone…Gonna Go Ghana. I settled on Ghanagogo, liking the quick repetition of the letter ‘g’ and the hint of time passing too fast despite all the waiting in a place where time is not kept by a clock. It also turns out that Agogo is the surname of a former Ghanaian footballer and the ‘nicknamesake’ of my main counterpart’s son. It felt like it was really meant to be then.

Macondo is the mythical town Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s 100 Years of Solitude, takes place in. I use it as my code title for the village I was placed in for my service.

For my third year, I named the town I moved to Poblacion. Figured I would keep with the Spanish theme.
